Botox - Frequently Asked Questions
+ What is Botox? How does botox work?
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, is a neuromodulator that is popularly used for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and signs of aging. Botox is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium A. Botulinum bacterium, which can temporarily diminish the movement of muscles that cause wrinkles on the face. This neuromodulator, or neurotoxin, decreases the appearance of wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and eyebrow furrows, by inhibiting the nerve impulses that cause facial muscles to contract. This results in a decrease in dynamic wrinkles -the facial lines that form over time from frowning, smiling, and other expressions.
Areas most frequently treated are:
Glabellar area or the 11’s: frown lines between the eyes
Crow’s feet: lines around your eyes
Frown lines: horizontal forehead wrinkles that form when you raise your eyebrows
Radial lip lines (smokers’ lines): line above your lips
Bruxism/TMJ/facial slimming: enlargement of masseter muscles
*For deeper, static wrinkles (caused by breakdown of collagen in the skin, fat loss, and loss of plasticity) we recommend dermal fillers

+ What Causes Wrinkles?
Wrinkles are most commonly caused by exposure to UV light (which causes the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the deeper layers of skin), environmental damage, smoking, repeated facial muscle activity (such as smiling, frowning, squinting), and the natural aging process.
+ Is Botox safe?
Botox, when administered by a professional, is a safe method of diminishing wrinkles and rejuvenating the look of facial skin. Despite the connotation of its name – botulinum toxin - Botox does not cause botulism and it is not poisonous.
Botox has been used in medicine for over 20 years - in 2018 alone, over 7.4 million Botox treatments were performed, as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Botox is diluted to a very controlled solution and injected into the muscles with a very thin needle -it is almost painless. At most, patients may feel a slight burning or stinging sensation while the solution is being injected.
You are not considered a candidate for Botox treatment if you have any of the following:
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Allergy to Botulinum Toxin
- Neuromuscular disorder
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Allergy to human albumin
+ How long until I see the effects of Botox? How long do the effects last?
For most patients, the effects of Botox begin to be seen within a few days of treatment. On average, Botox can take up to 3-7 days for forehead and eye areas, and 2-3 weeks for jaw areas.
Botox will last 3-4 months before another treatment is required. After several treatments, most patients have experienced smoother looking skin for longer periods of time.
+ Pre-Treatment Guidelines
Most patients do not require any preparation, to minimize the risk of increased bleeding or bruising at injection sites you may wish to discontinue the following:
- Alcohol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Aleve, Motrin, etc.), fish oil (omega 3 fatty acids), gingko biloba, ginseng, green tea, garlic, St. John’s Wort, high doses of vitamin E, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (3-5 days prior to treatment). Consumption of these may result in an increased risk of bleeding and bruising at injection sites.
* If you are using prescription Aspirin or blood thinners, do not discontinue use unless permitted by your physician.
+ Post-Treatment Guidelines
Please DO NOT touch, rub, or massage the injection sites for 2-4 hours following treatment.
Please avoid facials and facial massages for one week, as this can disperse your injections.
You will able to resume normal activity after treatment
You will be able to apply makeup after your treatment to cover any redness that may occur.
Dermal Fillers - Frequently Asked Questions
+ What are dermal fillers? How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal filler treatments, also known as a non-surgical facelifts, consist of hyaluronic acid (HA) which can be injected into facial areas to smooth out facial folds and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is found naturally in the body and helps produce collagen and elastin in the skin. Dermal fillers add volume to the lips, cheeks, and contour facial features that have lost their fullness due to aging, sun exposure, and illness, etc.
Dermal fillers replace the skin’s natural collagen that breaks down over time, giving the treated areas a rejuvenated, natural, and plumper appearance. Unlike Botox, which smooths wrinkles with neurotoxins, dermal fillers add volume to areas needing treatment.
+What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?
• Cheeks: injections into the cheeks will add volume and provide a more youthful, and plump appearance
• Nasolabial folds "laugh lines": injections into the lines that run from corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth
• Marionette lines: injections into the lines that run from the corner of the mouth to the jaw
• Lips: injections to lips will add volume and shape, for either a subtle enhancement or a more plump appearance
• Tear troughs: injections below the lower eyelid to reduce the appearance of dark circles
• Jawline: injections around the jaw may disguise jowls and contour the jawline in certain patients
• Chin: injections to the chin will help enhance and shape the face and jawline
• Temples: injections to fill in the hollow temple areas
• Hands: injections into hands that have an aged appearance, due to thinner skin and wrinkles
+ Are dermal fillers safe?
Dermal fillers have been shown to be safe and effective when performed by a trained professional. It is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that does not require anesthesia, and has been approved by Health Canada and the FDA.
Some patients may experience bruising in treated areas, however, this will only last a few days. For most patients, the treatment causes minimal discomfort. However, if a patient is concerned about pain, a topical anaesthesia may be offered. Treatment normally takes only a few minutes.
+ How long until I see the effects of dermal fillers? How long does the dermal filler last?
Results from dermal fillers are typically immediate.
The results vary per treatment, but normally last between 6-12 months.
If you are unhappy with the results of your dermal filler treatment, the process can be reversed or corrected using hyaluronidase.

Belkyra - Frequently Asked Questions
+ What is Belkyra (Deoxycholic Acid)? How does it work?
Belkyra (Deoxycholic acid) is a bile acid found in the body that aids in the breakdown of dietary fat in the body. Belkyra is the first FDA approved non-surgical injectable to destroy fat cells and aid the reduction of fullness under the chin, also known as submental fullness or “double chin.”
For each Belkyra treatment, a patient will receive multiple injections under their chin – the number of injections depends on how much fat is stored in the submental area as well as the patient’s desired aesthetic results. Once the fat cells have been treated, they are no longer capable of storing fat. Therefore, once a patient’s desired profile is achieved, no further treatments will be necessary.
+ What causes submental fullness?
Submental fullness can be caused by genetics, weight gain, and/or the natural aging process. Patients that struggle with diet-resistant and exercise-resistant fat, under the chin or in other areas of the body, find that Belkyra is an effective solution.
+ Is Belkyra safe?
Belkyra is safe when administered by a trained professional. It is FDA-approved for submental treatments.
Belkyra has been used to treat other areas such as: inner thighs, bra and back fat, please inquire if interested.
+ How long until I see the effects of Belkyra? How many treatments will I need and how long do the effects last?
Each procedure takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Results will begin to show in 4-6 weeks. Each Belkyra treatment is given at least 1 month apart, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient and depends largely on the aesthetic goals that have been discussed between the patient and Dr. Naidu.
+ What are the most common side effects with Belkyra?
Most patients will experience some stinging, and pain during the treatment.
The most common side effects post treatment include: swelling, pain, tingling, redness, and bruising in the area.
