Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Today in Orchid Medical's blog, we're going to tell you about laser skin resurfacing!
What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing is a process that uses lasers to improve the look of wrinkles, scars, and other blemishes. It can also be used to fix skin coloration issues, tighten skin, or remove lesions—both cancerous and non-cancerous ones.
The laser technique uses short pulsating beams of light that are concentrated on irregular skin. This process removes the outer layer of your skin very precisely by vaporizing it and then heating the underlying layer called the dermis.
The lasers work by stimulating the growth of new collagen fibres, leading to smoother and firmer skin. Many people know this procedure by other names, such as lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.
Who is Perfect For Laser Skin Resurfacing?
If any of the following apply to you, laser skin resurfacing may be right for you:
Scars from acne or chickenpox
Uneven skin pigmentation
Skin scars or birthmarks
Age spots and liver spots
Sun-damaged skin
After a facelift, your skin may be non-responsive.
Fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, or mouth
Enlarged oil glands on your nose.
Candidates Who Are Not Good For The Treatment
If you meet any of the following criteria, you are unlikely to be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing:
Acne on the face
Skins that are very dark in color
Depth wrinkles
Excessively or drooping skin
How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
There are three types of laser resurfacing: carbon dioxide (CO2), erbium lasers, and fractionated CO2 laser treatment.
CO2 Laser Resurfacing
CO2 laser resurfacing has been used to treat a variety of benign and malignant skin conditions for years. This resurfacing with very short pulsed light energy (ultra pulsed) or continuous light beams that are delivered in a scanning pattern to very precisely remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage to the surrounding structures is a newer generation of CO2 laser resurfacing.
CO2 laser resurfacing has been successfully used to treat wrinkles and scars as well as other benign skin growths such as warts, birthmarks, rhinophyma (enlarged oil glands on the nose), and other skin conditions. The recovery time for this procedure is up to two weeks.
Erbium Laser Resurfacing
The purpose of this is to diminish superficial and moderately deep lines/wrinkles on your face. Only a local anesthetic is needed. This laser can also be used successfully on other areas such as the hands, neck, or chest.
The gentleness with which erbium laser resurfacing abrades surrounding tissues is one of its advantages. This laser generates less collateral damage than a CO2 laser, such as swelling, bruising, and redness, so your recovery period should be shorter.
If you have a darker skin tone, this might be the right treatment for you. One week after the operation, your healing time will end.
Fractional Laser Resurfacing
Because your skin is exposed to many thin columns of laser light with fractional CO2 laser resurfacing, a large portion of your skin isn't harmed. Collagen between the treated laser holes tightens as a result of the treatment.
The advantage of this sort of laser is that less skin is damaged. With fractional laser resurfacing, the risk is that because the laser light penetrates more deeply than other lasers, there’s a greater risk of complicated healing and scarring. However, this laser also leads to faster recoveries - only one week compared to other methods.
